Exploring the Traits of Writing: Enhancing Skills and Fostering Creativity
We started our exploration of the writing traits in class with the goal of "enhancing skills and fostering creativity." Understanding and mastering the six plus one attributes; ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions as well as the extra trait of presentation were the main objectives of the discussion.
The idea was to view writing not just as an academic task but as an art form where creativity and technical skill coexist harmoniously. I found the approach refreshing and insightful, as it provided a structured yet flexible framework to assess and improve writing.
As I began to examine the material, I was filled with enthusiasm. It was intriguing to discover how every attribute adds to a well-rounded piece of writing. It was a breakthrough to me that writing could be divided into such discrete and controllable components, and I was excited to investigate how this could be used in a classroom setting.
The Traits of Writing offer an invaluable toolkit that I can integrate into my teaching methodology. By focusing on each trait, I can design lessons that allow students to explore their creativity while simultaneously building solid writing skills. For example, exercises on Voice can encourage students to find and express their unique styles, while lessons on Organization and Conventions can help instill the technical proficiency needed in academic writing.
