How do you feel about the teaching of writing now?

My view on Teaching writing.

Teaching writing should not be taken as a chore. I feel that that is the common trait in most teachers these days.
After this course, I have learned that teaching writing can be a whole treat, and as such it is my view that being a teacher of Writing will be something worthwhile. I learned about the importance of the writing process and that is a guide for writers. It outlines the direction in which the writing goes until the final product has been completed. I understand that it is not linear so that allows the writer to go back and change concepts, and or ideas to provide the written piece more depth for the reader.

I learned about the writing traits, that allow the writer to share their ideas, thoughts, and voice with an audience. Through these traits, I learned that to teach writing activities the flow must be interactive and also motivate students to want to create a written piece to begin with, if young writers are not motivated to write then it will be a tug of war to get substantial written work from them.

This notion then gives air to the mindset that the environment for writing is very important. students should be transported to a place that stimulates their need to write. and their want to be creative.
on that note what I even realize is that depending on the writing genre that would be needed at the time, the class environment can reflect it. For example, students take part in expository writing on how to build a sandcastle, and the teacher transforms the class into the beach, playing ocean sounds with seagulls and sand in buckets. this provides the students with ideas to write their pieces because they have visuals to transport them to that place.

I feel excited to teach writing. I learned about some new strategies that make students more encouraged about being a part of their learning and also, I learned about how to make writing fun and engaging.

  1. Hi Whitnie! I have to admit that I am one who viewed teaching writing as a chore simply because I was unaware of the writing process, the traits or even how to create the environment to stimulate the need for writing and creativity as expounded on in this post. Your example of making your classroom reflect the genre was a great idea one in which I will definitely use in my classroom.
